The Hottest Home Trends of 2018!

As we head into a new year and a new set of emerging design trends, it feels right to reflect back on our favorite trends of 2018. For the past 12 months, we’ve celebrated frugal luxury, Mother Earth and simplicity with a bit of sparkle. And we have it on good authority that we’ll see these trends continue to evolve and surprise us in the coming year. Stay tuned to see what designers have in store for us in 2019!

1. Go bold, not bland

When it comes to selecting interior paint colors, neutrals reign supreme. Shades of gray, taupe, beige and white have always made an excellent background palette for your furnishings and artwork. But this year, lets expand the definition of “neutral” and consider PPG Paints’ 2018 color of the year, Black Flame. With undertones of deep indigo, this timeless hue gives a room a modern look, whether it’s used as an accent wall or to highlight cabinetry. If using a darker color makes you a bit nervous, start with something small, but be prepared to fall in love with it. It’s time to make a statement – go bold or go home.

2. A twist on tiles

Geometric tiles can turn the most mundane space into a masterpiece. There are a number of trendy patterns, finishes and colors from which to choose, whether you decide to use these tiles as a backsplash, in the shower, as an accent wall or as flooring. The design options are seemingly endless as you can mix and match tiles to give any space a truly unique appearance.

3. Make room for metallic

Every house can use a bit of shine, and lucky for us, metallics continue to trend through the new year. Gold, bronze, brass, silver and rose gold used as accents throughout the house add warmth and texture. If you’re new to the world of metallics, start off simple with a lamp or picture frame. Or, consider changing your cabinet knobs for a more modern look. Don’t be afraid to mix finishes — try using polished silver with oiled bronze for a more eclectic style. Metallic is a neutral we can all embrace in one way or another, so don’t be afraid to give it a try.

4. Shout-out for shiplap

Thanks to a certain TV show about a home design couple based in Waco, Texas, there’s nary a budding designer who hasn’t heard of shiplap. While it’s rarely used instead of drywall anymore, it has gained popularity as a way to add warmth and texture to a room. Shiplap is milled boards that fit snugly together, leaving a distinct line between each. Imagine the interior walls of an old barn and you’ve captured the essence of shiplap. But if rustic charm isn’t really your thing, don’t fret — the wood can be stained or painted to complement any décor style. If you want to look of shiplap without a much labor, consider peel-and-stick wood veneer as an option.

5. Wet rooms

If a bathroom remodel is on your agenda this year, consider transforming the space into one of the latest trends, a wet room. What’s a wet room, you ask? It’s exactly as it sounds – a room designed where everything can get wet. Cabinetry is adequately sealed and the floors and walls are made of water resistant materials to avoid warping. But, as most people don’t like the idea of a soggy toilet seat, a lot of homeowners install a wall of glass to separate the shower from the rest of the bathroom. Floors typically slope toward a central drain, and the overall look is sleek and modern.
